Coral Gables, Fla. — The Frost School of Music Band of the Hour is the marching band and pep band at the University of Miami. It is the largest and most spirited student organization on the UM campus. Under the direction of Professor Jay C. Rees, nationally recognized for his progressive approach and cutting-edge style, the Band of the Hour is an ensemble of student members from all fields of study, performing exciting custom musical arrangements and contemporary, drum corps-style drill design. Whether you’re a music major at Frost, or any other major across our diverse campus, the Band of the Hour is your place to make great music, make lifelong friends, and make a difference in the community.
1. YOUR COLLEGE EXPERIENCE: As the spirit of the campus and the face of Hurricane life, the Band of the Hour provides an unparalleled opportunity to engage in artistic expression with hundreds of other students from around the world who are seeking a meaningful and engaging college experience at the University of Miami. You will be part of a worthwhile activity that translates directly into all aspects of your college studies, while getting a front row seat to all home football and basketball games. We believe strongly in professionalism, responsibility, and accountability in order to achieve excellence both on and off the field.
2. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Financial stipends and scholarships are offered to ALL participating members of the Frost Band of the Hour. It is possible to earn up to $3,500 per school year just for participating in the Frost Band of the Hour. As a member of the marching band, you will receive a $1,500 stipend. Leadership positions, such as drum major, section leader, or equipment manager, qualify for a $1,000 scholarship. Join the pep band and earn an additional $1,000 stipend.
3. LIFE SKILLS: The Frost Band of the Hour will require some of your time, but it will also help you focus your time at the University of Miami. We teach students to plan ahead and strategize all the various aspects of their college career. Developing time management skills are an important element not only for UM Band students, but in all of life. Band of the Hour students and alumni agree that they are more successful in their studies and professional careers due to their involvement in the UM marching and pep band program.
Band Camp begins on August 11th for percussionists, dancers, and color guard. Band Camp begins on August 13th for brass and woodwind players.
